Independent game journalism from the bottom of the world.
Praxuneli started as a personal blog by founder James Tūhoe, a Wellington-born developer turned full-time game critic. Frustrated by the lack of a New Zealand-centric gaming voice, James launched the site from his Ponsonby flat with a secondhand gaming PC and a lot of opinions.
Eight years later, Praxuneli has grown into a team of seven reviewers spread across Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch — covering everything from AAA blockbusters to indie gems. We've reviewed over 340 titles and have no plans to slow down.
Our editorial policy is simple: we play every game to completion before scoring it, we accept no advertising from game publishers, and we always disclose when a review copy was provided by a developer.
Three principles that guide every review we publish
A 6/10 is a 6/10. We don't inflate scores to maintain publisher relationships. If a game is mediocre, we say so clearly and explain why.
We test NZ server latency, note delayed release dates, and consider the local gaming community when assessing multiplayer titles.
We'd rather publish a thorough review two days after launch than rush out a half-baked take. Quality journalism takes time.
Seven passionate gamers across Aotearoa
Founder & Lead Reviewer — Auckland
Specialises in action RPGs and open-world games. Has been gaming since the SNES era and still believes Chrono Trigger is the greatest game ever made.
Senior Reviewer — Wellington
Horror and narrative game specialist. If it has a branching story or makes you jump out of your seat, Sophie has already finished it twice.
Strategy & Simulation — Christchurch
The team's resident grand strategy obsessive. Has logged over 4,000 hours in 4X games and considers that a conservative estimate.
Indie & Platformer Reviewer — Auckland
Champion of underdog indie titles. Aroha has a gift for finding the hidden gems that slip past mainstream coverage.
FPS & Multiplayer — Hamilton
Competitive FPS veteran and esports commentator. Caleb assesses multiplayer titles with a rigour that goes well beyond the campaign.
Mobile & Handheld — Dunedin
Covers the mobile and handheld space with the same rigour applied to console titles. A fierce advocate for quality portable gaming.
